Keyword research

Keyword research shows how many people search for a phrase, how hard it is to rank for it and what searchers want. From the report you go straight to an article, rank tracking or a whole topic cluster with a plan of content to write.

Research a keyword

  1. Open keyword research

Open Tools → Keyword research. The page shows the research form and, below it, your Research history.

  2. Type the keyword and pick the market

Type a keyword (at least 2 characters). Country and Language are already set to the market of your workspace. You can choose any of the markets worldwide: when you change the country, the language switches to its main language, and you can still pick another one.

The research form with a keyword typed in and the list of countries open
Search the list to pick the country you want to rank in.
  3. Start the research

Click Research. Collecting the data takes a few minutes. The research shows at the top of the history as Collecting data with a timer, and the list refreshes by itself.

The history keeps every keyword you have researched, with its country and language.
  4. Open the report

When the data is ready, click the keyword or Open. If collecting the data stopped or failed, the row says so and offers Retry.

Read the report

Under the keyword you see its country, language and when the data was updated. Four cards sum up the keyword, each with a short hint:

MetricWhat it tells you
Monthly searchesHow many times a month people search for the keyword in that market.
DifficultyHow hard it is to reach the top results, from 0 to 100, with a label from Very easy to Very hard.
Cost per click (CPC)What advertisers pay for a click in Google Ads, in US dollars. A high CPC usually means the traffic is valuable.
Ad competitionHow many advertisers compete for the keyword: low, medium or high.

The report: the four metrics, searches over time and the search intent.
  • Searches over time shows the monthly searches as a chart, so you see seasonal peaks. Show as table lists the numbers.
  • Search intent says what people want: information, a specific site, to compare before buying or to buy. When a keyword has several intents, the first one is marked Main.
  • Google results opens the current top results for the keyword in that market.
  • Refresh data collects the data again. A refresh is a new research.

Below the report, Related keywords lists the phrases around your keyword with their monthly searches, difficulty, search intent, CPC and ad competition. The table starts with the most searched ones. Click a column header to sort by it, click it again to reverse the order. The table shows 20 keywords per page.

From keywords to articles and rank tracking

Tick the keywords you want to work with. A bar at the bottom shows how many you selected and their total monthly searches.

With one keyword selected, the bar also offers Write an article.
  • Write an article (with exactly one keyword selected) asks Semurai in the chat for an SEO article on that keyword, starting with an outline. Then you work on the article in the SEO editor.
  • Add to rank tracking starts checking the Google position of the selected keywords every day, in the market of the research. Each keyword takes one slot of your plan. See Rank tracking.
  • Discuss in chat at the top of the report asks Semurai to analyze the research, including the keywords you selected: priorities, clusters, intents, article topics and next SEO steps.
  • Clear unselects everything.

Topic clusters

A topic cluster is a content plan for one main topic: a pillar page, supporting articles, sales pages and FAQ pages, each with its keyword, priority, brief and status. Open Tools → Topic clusters. The top tiles sum up your clusters, their items, the search potential and the gaps still to cover.

Each cluster shows its potential, items, language, priority and how much of it is done.

Create a cluster

  1. Start a new plan

Click New cluster (or Create cluster when you have none yet).

  2. Describe the topic

Enter the Main topic, then check the Market, the Languages (up to 6, one plan per language) and the number of Items (from 8 to 24).

  3. Choose the analysis depth

Premium looks at competitors, keyword gaps, categories and missing pages. Competitive finds competitor gaps without category expansion. Standard builds a quick plan from core data.

  4. Keep competitor brands out

With Brand exclusions on, the plan does not promote competitor brands and replaces them with neutral alternatives. Add Excluded brands, Excluded domains and Excluded phrases, or leave the fields empty and AI detects brands from the project and its domain.

  5. Build the plan

Click Build plan. Building takes a few minutes and continues in the background, so you can close the window: the plan appears in the cluster list. If a build fails, choose Try again (finished languages are kept) or Change settings.

Work with a cluster

Open a cluster to see its metrics: Cluster potential, Coverage, Content items, Priority, Average difficulty and Demand trend. Execution plan shows how many items are done and suggests the Next step.

Items are grouped into Pillar page, Supporting articles, Sales pages and FAQ and snippet pages. Each item shows its address, monthly searches, difficulty, intent and relevance, a competitor gap when competitors rank and you do not, and the goal of its brief.

Each item says what to write and offers the next action.
  • Status: To do, In progress, Draft, Published, Done or Failed. Click the circle next to an item to mark it as done, or click again to undo.
  • What to do with the page: New content, Optimize existing (an existing page of your site fits the keyword), Consolidation (merge the intent with a matching page) or Cannibalization risk (two pages could compete for the keyword).
  • Generate, Optimize, Consolidate or Risk brief ask you to confirm, then Semurai writes the content. When it is ready, Open takes you to it in the SEO editor.

The side panels show the Exclusions (topics replaced with alternatives or removed from the plan), Competitive insights with competitor gaps and topical expansion, Internal linking recommendations with links that exist or are missing, and the Content brief with what the content must include.

Limits

  • Each research, refresh and cluster build counts toward the usage limits of your plan. On the Free plan you get 3 keyword research reports and 1 topic cluster a month.
  • Generating content from a cluster also counts toward the limits of your plan.
  • Rank tracking uses the tracking slots of your plan: 10 keywords on Free, 20 on Starter, 40 on Growth and 80 on Pro.
