Letter size in pixels

Letter is measured in inches, so its pixel size is the inches times the DPI. At 300 DPI, the usual target for print, Letter is 2550 × 3300 px.

At 150 DPI it is 1275 × 1650 px, at 96 DPI, common for web and office documents, 816 × 1056 px, and at 72 DPI 612 × 792 px.

Letter vs A4

Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm and A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Letter is about 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter, and its ratio, 17:22, is squarer than the 1:√2 of A4.

A file made for one prints badly on the other: the print dialog scales it down and adds margins, or cuts off the bottom. If your readers are in Europe, send A4; if they are in the US, send Letter.

Letter, Legal and Tabloid

Legal is 8.5 × 14 in, the width of Letter and 3 in longer. Tabloid is 11 × 17 in, two Letter sheets side by side; turned to landscape it is often called Ledger.

Half of a Letter sheet is 5.5 × 8.5 in: fold a Letter page in half and you get a small booklet page or flyer.

Tips

Set the size to 2550 × 3300 px before you design if the page will be printed.
For a landscape Letter page, swap the numbers: 11 × 8.5 in, or 3300 × 2550 px at 300 DPI.
Keep text and logos a few millimetres inside the edges: many office printers cannot print to the very edge.
Sending a page abroad? Check whether the reader prints on A4 and keep key content inside both sizes.
