What A2 is used for
A2 is a classic size for posters, event announcements, art prints and wall charts. It is also common for architectural plans and school presentation boards.
It sits between A3, which suits a noticeboard, and A1, which fills a wall. Two A2 sheets side by side make A1; one A2 folded in half gives A3.
A2 dimensions in pixels
A2 at 300 DPI is 4961 × 7016 px, the right size for an art print people look at from close up.
Most A2 posters are seen from a few steps away, where 150 DPI is sharp enough. At 150 DPI, A2 is 2480 × 3508 px, a quarter of the pixels and a much lighter file.
A2 vs the B2 poster
B2 is noticeably larger than A2 (420 × 594 mm): ISO B2 is 500 × 707 mm, and many print shops in Poland and other parts of Europe sell it rounded to 500 × 700 mm.
An A2 layout scales up to ISO B2 exactly, because both have the 1:√2 ratio. Scaled to the rounded 500 × 700 mm, it loses about 7 mm of length, so ask the printer which B2 they mean.
Tips
- Design A2 posters at 150 DPI (2480 × 3508 px): it is sharp from a normal viewing distance and keeps the file light.
- Make the headline readable from across the room: a few large words beat a paragraph.
- Use photos at least 2480 px wide if they fill the poster width at 150 DPI.
- Ask your printer for their bleed and colour requirements before you export.
