What A6 is used for

A6 is a common postcard size in Europe, printed in landscape at 148 × 105 mm. It is also used for greeting cards, invitations, small flyers, vouchers and pocket notebooks.

Because it is a quarter of A4, four A6 cards fit on one A4 sheet, which keeps short runs cheap on an office printer.

A6 page size in pixels

At 300 DPI, A6 is 1240 × 1748 px. Cards are held close to the eyes, so design them at 300 DPI to keep small type and fine lines sharp.

At 150 DPI, A6 is 620 × 874 px, and at 96 DPI 397 × 559 px: fine for a preview, too small for print.

A6 vs the US 4 × 6 postcard

The most common US postcard is 4 × 6 in (101.6 × 152.4 mm): about 3 mm narrower and 4 mm longer than A6. The two look alike, but a design made for one needs small adjustments for the other.

Print shops usually ask for bleed on cards, often 3 mm per side. Check their template before you export.

Tips

  • Set the size to 1240 × 1748 px, or 1748 × 1240 px for a landscape postcard, before you design.
  • On a postcard, leave the back half free for the address and stamp if it goes by post.
  • Keep text a few millimetres inside the trim line: small cards make tight margins very visible.
  • Ask the print shop for their bleed and colour requirements before you export.

  3. Export a PNG or PDF and send it to your printer, after checking their bleed and colour requirements.

FAQ

Questions about this size

What is the A6 card size in inches?

A6 is 4.13 × 5.83 in (105 × 148 mm). It is close to the US 4 × 6 in postcard, but not the same size.

How many A6 fit on an A4 sheet?

Four. A4 halves into two A5 sheets, and each A5 halves into two A6 sheets, all with the same shape.

What resolution should an A6 postcard be?

300 DPI, which is 1240 × 1748 px in portrait or 1748 × 1240 px in landscape. Cards are read from up close, so a lower resolution shows quickly.
