What size an og:image should be

Use 1200 × 630 px: Meta asks for at least that size for the best display on high-resolution screens, and it fills a 1.91:1 link preview.

The Open Graph protocol itself sets no size; it only lets you declare og:image:width and og:image:height. Facebook takes images up to 8 MB, and anything under 600 × 315 px gets a small preview instead of the large card.

One image for Facebook, LinkedIn and X

A 1200 × 630 px image works on Facebook, LinkedIn and X.

LinkedIn’s preview is 1200 × 627 px, the same 1.91:1 shape within 3 px. According to design guides, X large cards are about 2:1 (1200 × 600 px), so on X roughly 15 px can be trimmed from the top and bottom. Keep text away from those edges.

Common Open Graph image mistakes

A common mistake is a square or tall image: Facebook crops images that are far from 1.91:1 in the feed.

Others are text right at the top or bottom edge, which X trims, and images under 600 × 315 px, which get the small preview.

Tips

  • Declare og:image:width and og:image:height next to og:image.
  • Keep text and logos at least 15 px from the top and bottom for X.
  • Keep the file well under Facebook’s 8 MB limit so previews load quickly.
  • Give each important page its own image that says what the page is about.

FAQ

Questions about this size

What is the best og:image size?

1200 × 630 px, a 1.91:1 image. Meta recommends at least that size, and it works for LinkedIn and X link previews as well.

What is the minimum Open Graph image size?

Facebook accepts images from 200 × 200 px, but anything under 600 × 315 px shows as a small preview instead of the large card. Aim for 1200 × 630 px.

Is 1200 × 627 or 1200 × 630 right for link previews?

Both are 1.91:1. LinkedIn quotes 1200 × 627 px and Meta 1200 × 630 px; the 3 px difference does not change the shape, so one 1200 × 630 px image covers both.
