Email header size

An email header is usually 600 px wide, matching the common 600 to 640 px email width, and about 200 px tall (3:1); design it at 1200 × 400 px and show it at 600 × 200 px so it stays sharp on high-density screens.

Standard email header size

There is no official email header size; 600 px wide is the long-standing convention, because most email templates are 600 to 640 px wide.

The height is up to you. Zoho ZeptoMail puts headers at roughly 70 to 150 px, and up to 200 px in its size table. A 3:1 header at 600 × 200 px is a common choice that leaves room for a logo and one line of text.

Why design it at 1200 × 400 px

Because high-density screens need twice the pixels: design the header at 1200 × 400 px and set it to show at 600 px wide in your email tool.

High-density screens on phones and laptops then get enough pixels for crisp text and logos. That is why the email header templates in Semurai Canvas are 1200 × 400 px: the same header as 600 × 200 px, shown at 2x.

Common email header mistakes

A common mistake is putting the key message only in the image: some email apps do not load images until the reader allows them.

Repeat the main line in live text below the header and give the image alt text. Another mistake is a tall header that pushes the start of the message off the first screen on a phone.

Tips

  • Set the image to 600 px wide in your email tool, even though the file is 1200 px wide.
  • Give the header alt text, so readers who block images still get the message.
  • Keep the header short, so the first lines of the email show on a phone without scrolling.
  • Use JPG for photos and PNG for logos and flat colour.

How to make it in Semurai Canvas

  1. Create a design in Semurai Canvas and pick an email header template (1200 × 400 px), or start blank and set the size in Resize.
  2. Switch on “Apply my brand” for your logo, colours and fonts, and keep the text large: it will show at half size.
  3. Export a PNG or JPG at 1x and set it to 600 px wide in your email tool.

FAQ

Questions about this size

What size should an email header be?

600 px wide and about 200 px tall is a safe default, matching the common 600 to 640 px email width. Design it at 1200 × 400 px so it looks sharp on high-density screens.

Should an email header image be 1200 px wide?

The file can be, but it should display at 600 px. A 1200 × 400 px image shown at 600 × 200 px has twice the pixels, so text and logos stay crisp on high-density screens.

How tall should an email header be?

Zoho ZeptoMail puts them at about 70 to 150 px, up to 200 px, at a 600 px width. A shorter header leaves more of the message visible on the first screen of a phone.
