The YouTube banner safe area

The safe area is a centred 1235 × 338 px strip, measured on a 2048 × 1152 px banner, and it is the only part YouTube shows on every device.

Outside that area, how much shows depends on the screen, and YouTube recommends the full 2560 × 1440 px especially for TVs, so use it for background, not for anything people need to read. On a 2560 × 1440 px file the same area scales to about 1544 × 423 px. Older guides give 1546 × 423 px; YouTube’s help page now gives 1235 × 338 px at the minimum size.

YouTube banner size and file limit

Upload 2560 × 1440 px if you can: YouTube recommends it, especially for TV, and accepts 2048 × 1152 px as the minimum.

Keep the file at 6 MB or smaller. Both sizes are 16:9, so a design made at one scales cleanly to the other.

Common banner mistakes

A common mistake is text near the edges, which phones and computers cut away.

Another is making only the safe-area strip: a 1235 × 338 px image is far below the minimum upload size. Make the full 16:9 banner and fill the outer parts with background that still looks right when cropped at any point.

Tips

  • Put the channel name and tagline in the middle of the safe area, not at its edges.
  • Use a background that still looks good when it is cut off anywhere outside the centre.
  • Preview the banner on a phone and on a computer before you publish it.
  • Keep the file at 6 MB or smaller; JPG keeps photo backgrounds light.

FAQ

Questions about this size

What size is YouTube channel art?

2560 × 1440 px, the same 16:9 shape as a 1440p video. The minimum is 2048 × 1152 px, and the file can be up to 6 MB.

Why is my YouTube banner cut off?

Each device shows a different part of the banner. Only the centred safe area, 1235 × 338 px on a 2048 × 1152 px banner, shows everywhere, so anything outside it is cropped on phones and computers.

Is the YouTube banner safe area 1546 × 423?

That number comes from older guides. YouTube’s help page now gives 1235 × 338 px at the 2048 × 1152 px minimum, which is about 1544 × 423 px on a 2560 × 1440 px banner.
