All sizes at a glance
Business card dimensions depend on where the card is printed. The US works in inches, Europe in millimetres, and each market cuts to its own standard.
| Use | Size | Ratio | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| US standard (recommended) | 3.5 × 2 in | 7:4 | |
| Common in Europe | 85 × 55 mm | 17:11 | Close to the credit card size, not the same |
| Common in Poland | 90 × 50 mm | 9:5 | The standard in Polish print shops |
| Credit card (ISO ID-1) | 85.6 × 53.98 mm | 1.586:1 | The bank card size, also used for some cards |
| US file with bleed | 3.75 × 2.25 in | 5:3 | 0.125 in bleed on each side: 1125 × 675 px at 300 DPI |
Pixels at each resolution
The same physical size needs more pixels the sharper you want it. 300 DPI is the usual target for print, 150 DPI for large posters seen from afar.
| Resolution | Pixels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 252 × 144 px | Screen previews |
| 96 DPI | 336 × 192 px | Web and office documents |
| 150 DPI | 525 × 300 px | Posters and large prints |
| 300 DPI | 1050 × 600 px | Print at full quality |

Limits and safe zone
- Bleed
- Usually 0.125 in (about 3 mm) on each side; some printers ask for 1.5 mm, or more for rounded corners
- Resolution
- 300 DPI for print
- Safe zone
- Keep text and logos at least 0.125 in (about 3 mm) inside the trim line, so the cut never touches them.

Business card dimensions by country
The US standard is 3.5 × 2 in, which is 88.9 × 50.8 mm. Many European printers cut 85 × 55 mm, and Polish print shops usually cut 90 × 50 mm.
The three sizes have different shapes: 7:4 in the US, 17:11 in Europe and 9:5 in Poland. Ask your printer which size it cuts before you design, because one file will not fit all three.
Bleed and the safe margin
Bleed is background that runs past the trim line, so a slightly off cut leaves no white edge. Printers usually ask for 0.125 in or 3 mm on each side, which makes a US card file 3.75 × 2.25 in, or 1125 × 675 px at 300 DPI.
Not every printer counts the same: some ask for 1.5 mm, and rounded corners can need more. Download your printer’s template, and keep text at least 0.125 in (3 to 4 mm) inside the trim.
Is a business card the size of a credit card?
No, though many guides say so. A credit card follows ISO ID-1: 85.60 × 53.98 mm. The European 85 × 55 mm card is close but slightly taller, and the US card, at 88.9 × 50.8 mm, is wider and shorter than both.
If you want a card close to bank card size, the European size is the nearest match of the three.
Tips
- Set the size before you design: 1050 × 600 px for a US card at 300 DPI, 1004 × 650 px for 85 × 55 mm.
- Run background colours and photos into the bleed, and keep names, phone numbers and emails well inside the trim.
- Make the front and the back as two designs of the same size, so each page keeps its own layout.
- Check small text at 100% zoom before you export: what reads on screen at full size can be too small on a 2 in tall card.
How to make it in Semurai Canvas
- Create a design in Semurai Canvas, open More → Resize…, choose “Resize this design” and enter 1050 × 600 px (3.5 × 2 in at 300 DPI).
- Add your logo, name and contact details, or ask the AI chat to lay out the card for you.
- Export a PNG or PDF, then check your printer’s bleed and colour requirements before you send the file.

FAQ
Questions about this size
What size is a business card in pixels?
1050 × 600 px at 300 DPI for a US card (3.5 × 2 in). A European 85 × 55 mm card is 1004 × 650 px and a 90 × 50 mm card is 1063 × 591 px.
What are standard business card dimensions in mm?
A US card is 88.9 × 50.8 mm. The common European size is 85 × 55 mm and the common Polish size is 90 × 50 mm.
How much bleed does a business card need?
Usually 0.125 in or 3 mm on each side, so a US card file is 3.75 × 2.25 in. Some printers ask for 1.5 mm, so always use their template.
Can I use 72 DPI for a business card?
Not for print. At 72 DPI a US card is only 252 × 144 px, so text and logos come out blurred. Design at 300 DPI, which is 1050 × 600 px.
